About

Hello, I'm Dio

I'm Dr Dionysios (Dio) Malas, a Research Associate in Medical and Soft Robotics at King's College London (School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences).

My research uses soft robotics to develop medical devices that improve patient outcomes and the clinician's experience.

Much of the technology behind endoscopy and minimally invasive medicine has barely changed in decades, and clinicians still guide rigid, hard-to-control instruments through delicate anatomy. I develop soft robotic, minimally invasive tools that make interventions across the body less invasive and more precise.

My work contributes to four areas:

  • Modelling of soft robots.
  • Force sensing that exploits the fluidic medium to give clinicians tactile feedback and reduce the risk of iatrogenic trauma.
  • Actuation methods for better control and faster response.
  • Miniaturised, steerable designs suited to a wider range of procedures in the gastrointestinal tract, the eye and the ear.

I hold a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from King's College London and an MEng in Mechatronic Engineering from the University of Manchester.

The SoroDoc exists to showcase the potential of soft robotics in medicine and to make the field easier to understand, whether you are a patient, a student, a clinician or a fellow researcher.

This is a personal project. Views expressed are my own and do not represent King's College London.
